Finally watertight

3

Mar 2020

Scaffolding went up in November and with bad weather and busy roofers it’s taken quite a while to get the roof watertight…

‘I realised I hadn’t really taken any photos of the problems with the roof – loose, broken or missing slates, ridge tiles partially falling off, lots of missing pointing. And then the biggies – the chimneys – leaking, missing pointing, not at all water tight…. strangely though, and maybe it’s the way that roofs were laid back in the day, but we’ve never had water coming through the ceilings… but it must have been funnelling it somewhere!

We still have most of the original roof, and luckily didn’t have to replace too many of the slates as they are apparently very expensive – natural slate! All of the original ridge tiles were also still there, they just weren’t really attached and some had slipped leaving holes (maybe thats how the mice got in!).

But now the roofers have finished, the scaffolding is down and there’s so much more light in the house… and hopefully less water and damp walls around the chimney breasts once we dry them out.

Eventually we’ll probably have to replace the whole roof but fingers crossed this keeps us going for at least a few years.

Oh and we’ve had a new front door fitted too 🙂
