Storm water

Feb 2020

We’ve been much luckier than most with the volume of rain and high winds – which is good as we have holes in the roof and chimney at the moment.

So after storms Ciara and Dennis we wandered down to the river… which is usually quite relaxing to watch with the weir acting like a mini waterfall, but this week it’s been so high you wouldn’t even know it was there, and The George Hotel was lucky not the be flooded.

This is the usual river level over the weir…

The river is so high you can’t even see it now!

This George Hotel has a lovely fishing area…

And it’s almost over the bank…

Our roofers continued work the previous week but found a few issues with the chimney – lovely hole – and started to fix it but it needed to be left to dry before they could do anymore… and then the storms came, so I’m hoping they come back this week to finish everything and make the house water tight!

And I’m not sure why we haven’t mentioned this one before… at least I don’t think we have…

Back in August we posted about our drains being overwhelmed with the rain… well it turns out there was a reason for this – and it’s still not fixed.

We thought we had a blocked rainwater drain so we called out a local company, Shottons Waste, to jet it and try to clear the blockage. They thought the drain had collapsed, so our builders dug a hole – and yes it was… but they thought something else was going on so called out a company to put a camera down… and it seems that when the curbstones were put in many years ago, highways may have cut through our drain – which goes across the road and into the soakaway in the field opposite.

In November Highways came out and said they needed to excavate to find out what’s going on – and this still hasn’t happened – so we still flood whenever it rains – the holes fill up with water before overflowing onto the road, and water collects under the house – so we’re just hoping they get things sorted before any further damage is caused to the house or foundations – especially as we’ve had new floors and underfloor heating put it – AARRGGHHHHHH!

We’ve got everything crossed and the council highways department on speed dial!
