Kitchen update

21

Jan 2020

It was a slightly depressing December as far as progress was concerned… we thought we’d have a kitchen for Christmas but a delay with our builder on other jobs meant that we didn’t start installing until a few days before, and then the problems began…

The first few units went in no problem, and then the tall integrated oven and fridge cupboards were put in and we realised that the kitchen company hadn’t measured properly so when you tried to open the doors they hit the ceiling beams.

A phone call later and they admitted they hadn’t measured the distance between the floor and the beams, so hadn’t taken them into account when they used extra tall units in the plan… hmmmmmm.

As it was only a few days before Christmas they also couldn’t get them replaced as the warehouse was shutting the next day until Jan 2nd, now I have no problem with giving people a proper holiday at Christmas but it was pretty frustrating – date for delivery – week of 6th Jan, which did give us a little more time to finish the tiled floor!

So on 6th January the tiled floor was finished and the joiner was booked to come back the next day to start again. He fitted the alcove cupboard and lovely solid oak worktop and started the island and Belfast sink base unit. I thought it was weird that I hadn’t had delivery confirmation from the kitchen supplier so I called to check when they were coming… and guess what… now they’re not coming until the 15th, so nice of them to call and tell me – aaarrrggghhhhhhhhhhh!

So work stopped for the second time…

Finally the replacement cupboards arrived, the right size, the right colour – it’s a miracle! But the joiner, was busy on other jobs… so for a few days so we just stared at the packaging.

But… now the work has started and wow it’s going to look amazing. This is the biggest kitchen we’ve ever had… and actually the only one we’ve ever bought so it’s exciting and terrifying at the same time as it’s a lot of money if you decide you don’t like it!

The kitchen is from MKM Building Supplies in Hexham, and apart from the hiccups and delay the kitchen is really good quality which is great news and hopefully the wait will be worth it in the end!

I’d always wanted a Belfast sink and an island… and luckily the room size allowed for both 🙂

We shopped around for taps and appliances and were able to buy in the Black Friday sales which was great as we needed everything… an integrated fridge freezer, oven and integrated microwave, induction hob and extractor.

Here’s the offending tall cupboards now fitting perfectly into the room with fully functioning doors, which is sort of what you want!

Obviously we’re not finished yet… the worktop has to be routed around the sink and tap fitted so we’re just waiting for a day when the joiner and the plumber can be here at the same time as you can’t uncut the lovely worktop!

Then we need the electricians to wire in the hob, oven, microwave and fridge and voila, a kitchen!

Then we need to see if our current dining table will fit between the island and the chimney breast!

There’ll still be the french doors to put in but before that we have to dig back the garden… phase 2!
