Taming the meadow

28

May 2019

With grass in the garden/meadow already being knee high and some lovely sunny weather we thought we’d better start to try and tame it.

When we first viewed the cottages we loved them… but then when we were shown the garden and extra land and we were sold!

1/4 acre might not sound like much but for two people used to a smallish city garden it’s a vast amount of space, perfect for the cliche of countryside living – chickens, vegetable plot and greenhouse.

But first we need to tame it. It’s been growing unmanaged for quite a while, although the grass in the field is getting long, as it’s previously been part of the farmers field it’s quite healthy. The garden on the other hand is a vast stretch of chunky weeds, out of control bushes, nettles and luckily a lot of dock leaves!

So we started in the garden. First we found a path… then attacked it with the strimmer to clear a path through to the trees and bushes that run down the centre of the garden.

The trees and bushes are huge and the roots are starting to push the retaining wall out so we need to chop the ones closest to the cottages down.

Digging back the retaining wall to help with drainage, damp walls, and create a lovely patio area is also on the list, but a little way down the line!

Next will come the chainsaw…
