A dusty mess
As the cottage has no heating so no existing pipework we’ve decided underfloor heating is the way to go.
However as the building has gone from four cottages, to two when we bought them, to one now, it means we have different floor levels, poured at different times and of differing quality, and one wooden floor – so job one involves taking out all of the existing floors! Messy messy messy!
We’ve moved into two rooms at the end of the cottage, while the builders get to work at the other.
It started with a small test hole to see how deep the concrete was, the pneumatic drills came out to play and the floor was broken up in no time… until they found the original stone slabs underneath.
Beautiful as they were lots were cracked and cold stone slabs were not what we’ve envisaged so out they came. The ones we could save are now stored for phase two, to create a lovely patio outside.
The bedroom was slightly easier as it had a wooden floor, so taking it out was fairly simple and it certainly explained why it was drafty and a little cold in there…
When it rained some water was coming in through an air vent which was too close to the drainage channel at the back of the house. But now that we’re not having wooden floors we no longer need the vent underneath the floor, so hopefully that will just be bricked up.
We’ve kept the floorboards that were in a good condition and although Mike thinks I’m bonkers, the plan is to use them to make alcove shelving and maybe even a bench seat and kitchen table top. We’ll see!
