Partridge vs crow

Jun 2021

For the last few months we’ve had a cute pair of red legged partridges hanging out in the garden. They’re not friendly like the pheasant (which hasn’t been back to see us since he was chased off by another male in March) but they love the bird feeder and hate crows…

The female keeps looking up at the feeder waiting for the little birds to drop some out for her – unlike Mr Pheasant she hasn’t figured out that she could jump up and knock some out herself!

We don’t have any chicks yet but that could also be because the crows keep stealing the eggs. We find them dropped all over the field and have even caught one on camera taking the eggs from a nest we accidentally uncovered when strimming some long grass. These eggs may have been the decoy, which is apparently what partridges do, as we didn’t find any broken shells in the garden so maybe they didn’t taste good!

They don’t really do anything interesting apart from chasing crows – but hey who can blame them!
